Technology Website Review

Each month the Technology Transfer chair will review an upstream oil and gas website which can be of benefit to the SPE membership in Thailand. The objective is to make technology and technology application resources available on the internet more visible to SPE membership, including student SPE members. Focus will be on internet resources that are free at the time of the review. Typical website reviews will include software applications, upstream oil and gas databases, innovative technology applications and technical publications or white papers.

Petroleum Engineering Calculators: http://www.peteng.com/

This website provides free software tools for drilling, reservoir, production, geosciences and economic analysis for use in upstream oil and gas. Equations used in the calculations are documented along with basic theory. A handy feature of the website is a bibliography section which documents the source of the equations used in the calculations. Many of the calculators have results plotted on charts for easy interpretation. For some of the applications, example input data sets are provided as well. While the focus of the website is on reservoir and production engineering calculations, however it also has useful tools for oil and gas project cash flow analysis, drilling engineering and well log analysis.

While the reviewer did not verify all the calculations, spot checks of the calculators showed that calculations are accurate and results (output table and charts) are presented instantaneously. The user interface is adequate and input data can be typed manually or cut and pasted from a spreadsheet. A user guide is provided which explains data input and output screens, as well as options for printing the results.

The website will be especially useful for students, summer interns and junior engineers who would like to perform quick calculations, for screening outcomes before a more detailed study. It is strongly suggested to verify the calculations using the equations and bibliography provided.
