The student chapter at Chulalongkorn has been founded for almost 20 years. Our petroleum engineering department accepts around 20 new students each year. Our students have participated in many activities – both SPE activities and those that we have arranged to encourage their role in the petroleum engineering field. For example, the monthly meetings, paper contests, field trips, and experience sharing events by our alumni.

ACTIVITIES SINCE 2011 ACADEMIC YEAR


Orientation & Experience Sharing , 9th Jun 2011 An orientation to welcome new students to our department and newcomers also share about their reason of choosing PE as their major. Also there was an experience sharing session about internship life at the end of the orientation.

PE Trip, 10th-12th Jun 2011 A 3-day trip arranged for all students to spend time together and get familiar with each other through several activities. And also we invite alumni in class of 2009, 2010, and 2011 to join the event to know more about the newcomers.

Teacher's Day, 23rd Jun 2011 Teacher's day is the traditional Thai culture to show gratefulness and to dignify the instructor. For present student to show their respect and allow alumni to come back to greet their instructor

SPE Road Show, 5th Aug 2011 Promote SPE and create awareness in E&P industry among the student in the related field. 68 attendants are mostly geologist and non-PE engineering which corresponding with the objective to create awareness in E&P industry among other related fields.

2011 SPE Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition (APOGCE) and 2011 PetroBowl, 19th-22th Sep 2011


2011 SPE Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition (APOGCE) APOGCE (2011 SPE Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition) is an event organized by SPE Asia Pacific. It is a student presentation/paper contest at the Jakarta Convention Centre, Jakarta, Indonesia on 20-22 September 2011.

Monthep Parimontonsakul, 4th year student in Petroleum Department, is the 2nd place winner in the student paper contest (undergraduate division).

2011 PetroBowl PetroBowl Competition 2011 will be established on 21 September in Jakarta, Trisakti University. It is a yearly competition matches three-person teams from participating universities under SPE Student Chapter against each other to answer questions ranging from the fundamentals of petroleum engineering to the history and current events of the oil and gas industry. There are 2 teams from Chulalongkorn.

Team B from Chulalongkorn is the 2nd place winner. It consists of

  • Niwit Anantraksakul - 4th year student in Petroleum Department
  • Raschaya Kumnoedbun - 3rd year student in Petroleum Department

Teacher's Day, 1st Jul 2010
In Thai culture, on teacher's day students show respect and thankfulness to teachers. Not only students, alumni also come back to greet their teachers and juniors.

Experience Sharing, 15th Jul 2010
The experience sharing event was intended to introduce to students the real working life. The speakers included personnel from various oil & gas industry-related organizations.

List of speakers:
1. Khun Suvaluck Ratanavanich from PTTEP (reservoir & production engineer)
2. Khun Karn Boonsri from PTTEP (drilling engineer)
3. Khun Hathaiporn Samorn from Chevron (geologist & geophysicist)
4. Khun Saroj Srisai from the Department of Mineral Fuel (government official)
5. Khun Chakorn Kanjanavasoontara from Schlumberger (wireline engineer)

There were altogether 34 participants, 14 2nd year students, 7 3rd year students, and 13 4th year students. Throughout 2 hours of the experience sharing session, speakers talked about life in their organizations. At the beginning of the event, they gave information about their work and explained their tasks and working environments. This was to give a brief image of their job positions and companies they work for. After that the speakers shared their experiences on topics based on audiences' questions.

The topics mostly focused on more in depth details of the speakers' work. Topics included the prominent points of each position, working and living overseas, role of women in the oilfield, the difference of working life and student life, the culture and tradition of each organization, scholarship and further study opportunities, and the characteristics required for each job position. The event was carried in a cozy atmosphere. More like an easy-going evening talk rather than a formal speaker-and-audience event.

This event can be beneficial to 2nd and 3rd year students who are seeking an internship opportunity, and 4th year students looking for a job. They will have a clearer view of each organization and the information gained can help on making decisions.

Petroleum Engineering Field Trip, 19th to 22nd January 2011
Petroleum engineering field trip was scheduled on 19th to 22nd January 2011. There were altogether 50 people joining the trip—among which were 23 sophomores, 22 juniors, and 2 graduate students. Visited places included Schlumberger Phitsanulok Base, Sirikit Oil Field, and Fang Oil Field.

Petroleum Engineering Orientation, 22nd Feb 2011
Petroleum engineering orientation event was held on 22nd February 2011. The event contained a presentation, which gave information about our department, and an exhibition.

Firstly, the presenter introduced the Department of Petroleum Engineering to attending students. The introduction was about the role of petroleum engineers in oil and gas industry, our curriculum and core courses, such as geology, reservoir engineering, drilling engineering, and production engineering, in details. And also different types of tasks that petroleum engineers have to take.

At the end of the event, attendees had a chance to look around the exhibition area. The exhibition shows general information of petroleum industry. From the origin of hydrocarbons to the production processes which include drilling and completion operations, production operations, safety practice, and new innovation related to the industry. Everything was printed on 10 exhibition boards and the boards were placed around the room.
